Cleaning Currency Counters: What to Do

Currency counters, be they coin counters or note counters, open up a whole new world of convenience for businesses. Whether you’re a small outfit looking to make counting the daily takings quick and convenient, or a major organisation needing to streamline your intake, they will be revolutionary to how your business works. However, everything needs a good clean now and then! Today the LJ International team walks you through caring for your money counter the right way.

Currency Counter Maintenance

Whether this is a first in your business, or you’ve upgraded to new models, it always pays to understand the full specs of the device you have bought. Now 2 models are exactly identical, and how much maintenance yours needs will depend heavily on extra features, style, and even size.

Of course, some basics (should) go unsaid. Don’t insert foreign objects into the machine- and remember, not all note counters can handle bands, staples, or paperclips, so these count too. Always stay within the suggested operating specifications, and use it for what it is intended for. This will avoid unnecessary wear-and-tear and damage to the unit.

It’s a smart idea in South Africa’s dusty climate to keep currency counters covered when not in use. Get into the habit of wiping external items- thinks feeds, output trays, stackers, and hoppers- with a lint-free, clean dry cloth daily.

With these basics in play, and some regular maintenance, your machine will be an investment which pays off for years to come.

How Often Do You Need a Full Clean?

If you are regularly wiping the heavy traffic zones as we suggest, you won’t need to do a full clean all that often. It is a good idea to do a full clean weekly or bi-weekly, depending on how heavily the unit is used. If you start noticing issues processing a batch, miscounts, or bent notes/unusual bill rejections, it’s time for a clean!

Canned (sometimes called compressed) air is a great way to clean out the insides with minimal issue. Just be sure to operate your brand of choice in compliance with the can’s instructions. Always unplug the machine before doing any maintenance! Aim the can from the surfaces of the counters, blowing out every opening to ensure debris is removed from sensors and rollers.

If you need to perform maintenance regularly, consider investing in a money counter card cleaner. This will help remove ink residue, dirt, paper dust, and other debris as well as clean rollers, lenses, plates, and feeds accurately. It is inserted like a regular banknote, and simply runs through the machine. These cleaning cards are designed to pick up marks as they do their thing, so run it through several times until you notice it coming out ‘clean’ (no new marks) on the other side.

With a quick and simple cleaning regime in place, you ensure a long lifespan and accurate counts for the note counter. This also helps cut down on service calls and other issues, like machines going offline and needing diagnostics. Regular maintenance of your note counter is just smart!
